Monomyth

   Monomyth is a piece where I felt I could finally achieve a large scale sense of gestural sound control, with the bonus of an ensemble performance. This piece transforms the Kinect into a MIDI controller, allowing notes to be triggered by touching a specific point in a three-dimensional space. 

   The interaction here between a performer and these hovering sounds is one of intrigue and mysticism. Though using the Kinect as a MIDI controller creates an effective illusion of interacting with spatialized sounds, this method of gestural sound control remains a stepping stone toward a larger goal of finding an even more interactive setting between sound and performer. 

   The patch provided needs other components to function. One is a program to convert Kinect data into OSC data, and the other is to route the OSC data to specified addresses which can be in turn designated within the max patch. The patch then transmits MIDI data to a specific location. The patch allows for each sound to have an x, y, z coordinate, a size, and a MIDI pitch, velocity, and channel.

us that cross-hairs look both ways."


Collateral murder draws from a transcript of a real-life event. While observing leaked video footage of American soldiers committing atrocities during a middle-eastern conflict, I came to an alarming realization. It was a realization that decentralized my sense of self for several days. Somehow, despite the horrific scene, I felt a debilitating sense of grief for both the soldiers and the dead. This piece uses a transcript of the event as a source of dialogue. Performers all speak simultaneously, prompted with written emotions and gestures. The result is occasional cacophony mingled with hazily understood sentence fragments. The performance is just as confusing as the real event.


Performer instructions:

Each voice performs each stanza by reciting all four lines in any order. They end by reciting the line they started with. Pause for a time between each stanza. Anyone may begin the next stanza. Vary the dynamics. Follow the given instructions for each movement.

Maybe he has a weapon down in his hand?

All you gotta do is pick up a weapon.

If we see a weapon, we're gonna engage


We have individuals going to the scene, looks like possibly uh picking up bodies and weapons.

Let me engage. Come on!

I'm firing. I got 'em.

I think the van's disabled.

Go ahead and shoot it.

Be advised.

There were some guys popping out with AKs behind that dirt pile break.

We also took some RPGs off, uh, earlier.

Make sure your men keep your eyes open.

November 2015

Leap Motion

A meditative improvisation for electronics and voice.

This piece is a minimal contemplation of soft impulses. Electronics are controlled with the Leap Motion. A max patch uses finger and hand locations as amplitude control for sixteen sine waves. The sine wave oscillators are abstracted as a 4x4 grid in physical space above the leap motion. As the electronicist slowly moves their hand through space, pure tones slowly wax and wane. The vocalists subtly reinforce prominent tones and sustain them for the length of one breath. As a sine tone fades and the voice remains, a sonic transformation takes place.
